KELOID #5 - CURIOUS CABINETS

a memento mori of Victorian objects questioning the vanity of colonisation

 

CURIOUS CABINETS is an extension of a work by megan evans for an exhibition at Ballarat Art Gallery titled SQUATTERS AND SAVAGES.  Artist Peter Waples-Crowe and megan evans responded to the galleries colonial print collection that portrayed Indigenous Australians as either noble savages or reduced them to a gross Eurocentric depiction of a savage.

Curious Cabinets consists of evans’s collection of Victorian objects that are reinterpreted inside this context, showing the violent detritus of Victoriana.
