KELOID #4 - SQUATTERS AND SAVAGES
SQUATTERS AND SAVAGES was an exhibition at the Ballarat Art Gallery in 2017.
Artist Peter Waples-Crowe invited me to work with him to produce a body of work in response to the galleries colonial print collection.
Peter is Ngarigo and his ancestors belonged to the land near where my Great Grandfather Patrick John Kelly first occupied land as a coloniser in 1872.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Peter and myself done after 2 years working together and researching our individual family histories.
We developed work individually but collaborated conceptually.
We did several road trips to Peters country and also to the property where my ancestors lived. This exhibition critiqued colonial occupation in contemporary times from either side of the frontier, influenced by the gross stereotyped images produced by the colonial mind that consist of the biggest collection of colonial prints in Australia.
